Kalliopeia Foundation: Podcast of Our Events and Conversations

Kalliopeia was founded to support a cultural shift, one we are now beginning to experience, to ways of living that celebrate life's extraordinary diversity, yet are rooted in the recognition of life's sacred unity. We call the experience of the sacred interconnectedness of life "oneness." By attuning to that place of oneness within ourselves, others and the natural world, we can begin to evolve sustainable local and global systems of living based on care, equality, responsibility, and respect for all life. We seek to join with others in this work to honor our earth, its plants, creatures and peoples.

Occasionally we find very unique and unusual expressions of beauty and wisdom in pursuit of our mission. This podcast is a way of sharing these with you.

Larry Merculieff - Going to the Heart of Sustainability: An Indigenous Wisdomkeeper's Perspective

Indigenous peoples who have intimate and sustained contact with their lands and waters and who have maintained the spiritual basis for relating to everything in their environment have a profound understanding of what "sustainability" really means even though that is not the word that they would use. Western concepts of sustainability generally are used out of meaningful context, limiting the depth to which we can go collectively and as a society in restoring harmony in our relationship with Mother Earth. Indigenous elders world-wide say that one day the world will look to indigenous peoples for the wisdom in caring for our Earth Mother, and many feel the time is NOW as her life supporting systems are being pushed to the edge of viability.<br />
<br />
Ilarion Merculieff is a traditional Aleut messenger dedicated to sharing Indigenous elder wisdom and the messages of Indigenous spiritual leaders with the world. He has nearly four decades of experience serving his people, the Aleuts of the Pribilof Islands and other Indigenous Peoples, in a number of capacities, locally to internationally. Larry is a passionate advocate for Indigenous rights/wisdom, and harmonious relationship with the Earth.<br />
<br />
Close to Merculieff's heart are issues related to cultural and community wellness, traditional ways of living, Elder wisdom, and the environment. Having had a traditional upbringing, Merculieff has been, and continues to be, a strong voice advocating the meaningful application of traditional knowledge and wisdom obtained from Elders in Alaska and throughout the world when dealing with modern day challenges. As the Coordinator for the Bering Sea Council of Elders, Merculieff works with some of the most revered Elders from seven regions throughout Alaska focusing on the health of the Bering Sea ecosystem and the viability and health of the coastal and river cultures dependent on it. Merculieff has shared Elder wisdom locally, nationally, and internationally, and his writings and interviews have appeared in such publications as the Winds of Change, YES, Red Ink, Alaska Geographic, Smithsonian, National Geographic, and Kindred Spirits. Larry Merculieff was featured in National Wildlife magazine as an "American Hero", having called national and international attention to industrialized overfishing and major adverse changes in the Bering Sea ecosystem.

            <itunes:summary>While the current educational system has its roots in the industrial age and a mechanical mindset, the converging crises of our time call for a new, more holistic approach to learning that supports the unfolding of and integration around each person’s deepest potential.

Drawing from interdisciplinary research in human development, scientist and educationist Sraddhalu Ranade will outline the deeper principles around which a more holistic approach to education can be practically realized today, and discuss methods and techniques that foster in both children and adults a revivified sense of wonder and a more soulful engagement with the world. Please join us for stimulating exploration of how we can re-envision and re-create education to meet the whole person in the 21st century.

Presented at Kalliopeia Foundation’s 2011 winter gathering for our grant partners, master storyteller Michael Meade gives mythological context for the breakdowns and breakthroughs of our time. With story, drumming and conversation, this "mythic inoculation" against apocalyptic thinking shows that the world does not end, but rather calls us to pick up and weave the thread of our own life into the ongoing renewal of creation.

From March 17th through 21st, 2010, Kalliopeia Foundation held a gathering for all of its current grant partners and associates, at Cavallo Point Lodge in Sausalito, California. We were blessed with not only very fine weather, but the opportunity to be together with a wonderful, inspiring group of people, many of whom would never otherwise find their way to meet one another. Much joy was experienced, much wisdom shared, and much reverence held for the spiritual nature of the life we share with all kingdoms on this Earth.

Marguerite Rigoglioso - The Oracles of Delphi and Dodona: Ancient Sites of Women's Wisdom and Gods' Prophecy

Marguerite Rigoglioso, Ph.D. author of The Cult of Divine Birth in Ancient Greece in conversation at Kalliopeia Foundation.

In ancient times, priestesses delivered the wisdom of the deities to guide individuals, kings, and countries in their personal and political affairs. In this provocative talk, author Marguerite Rigoglioso reveals the fascinating operations of the oracles at Delphi and Dodona in ancient Greece, exploring how women functioned as the most famous psychics and channelers of all times. Her talk will cover:

-priestesses' use of sacred medicines to induce trance

-the mystical connections of their activity with sound vibrations and light

-why such women were related symbolically to the honeybee – and what the demise of the bee might be prophesying today

-the importance of the snake as a force for healing, protection, and prediction at oracular sites

-how these oracular practices were related to an entire cult dedicated to divine birth

-the link among the oracles, virgin birth, and the Pleiades, an asterism deeply revered by the Greeks

Marguerite Rigoglioso is the author of the groundbreaking books The Cult of Divine Birth in Ancient Greece (2009) and the forthcoming Virgin Mother Goddesses of Antiquity (Sept. 2010). She holds a doctorate in humanities and a master's in philosophy and religion from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), as well as a bachelor's degree from Vassar College.
The Living Universe: Where are we? Who are we? Where are we going?, An Evening with Duane Elgin

Duane Elgin will speak about his new book and the stunning insights emerging from science and spirituality that offer a new understanding of the universe, ourselves, and the human journey. Duane brings together evidence from cosmology, biology and physics to suggest that the universe is not fragmented and dead but rather unified and alive— an insight that, in turn, is in harmony with all of the world’s major spiritual traditions. A living universe perspective radically transforms our concept the cosmos, our identity as beings of cosmic connection, and our understanding of the evolutionary journey of the human family.<br /><br />
Duane Elgin has dedicated his life to writing and speaking about our world in transition: on the staff of a Presidential Commission on the American Future; as a senior social scientist at a major think tank (SRI International) doing studies on the long range future; co-authoring a book with the eminent scholar, Joseph Campbell, Changing Images of Man; and writing seminal books that include Awakening Earth, Promise Ahead, The Living Universe, and Voluntary Simplicity. He has also co-founded three trans-partisan organizations working for media accountability and citizen empowerment. Duane received the International Goi Peace Award in recognition of his contribution to a global “vision, consciousness, and lifestyle” that fosters a “more sustainable and spiritual culture.” He earned an MA in economic history from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the Wharton School.<br /><br />

The Insight Prison Project - a conversation with Jacques Verduin, Rusty Trunzo, Pat Mims, and Arlinda Love

We are delighted to invite you to spend an evening with Jacques Verduin (IPP Founder), Rusty Trunzo and Pat Mims, two former life sentenced men that spent 30 and 20 years incarcerated and Arlinda Love, a mother, victim and activist that works with them in the Richmond community. The evening offers stories of strength and inspiration from people that live lives of service dedicated to sharing the real answers they have found in dealing with "living life on life's terms". Be ready to be amazed, deeply moved, and bent over in laughter by these characters and their testimony from the trenches. You might find some answers to 'issues you are doing time on in your own life...'<br /><br />
Jacques Verduin is the founder and executive director of the Insight Prison Project (IPP). For over a decade this project has been teaching thousands of prisoners a highly practical process of transformation that includes emotional literacy, somatic awareness, non-violence and restorative justice. IPP runs 20 classes in San Quentin, works in 6 other state prisons and regularly travels abroad to train folks in other countries on issues ranging from gang violence to prisoner rehabilitation. He has built a small cadre of 'Change Agents' a team of former life sentenced men trained by IPP during their incarceration that now work with imprisoned and gang youth in Oakland and Richmond. The agency offers training to existing organizations in offering a life skills curriculum that increases their success rate with challenged youth.

Nature Awareness and Cultural Mentoring, with Jon Young - Part 1

This is part one of a two part conversation with Jon Young.<br /><br />
As we build meaningful relationships with the earth, our communities and ourselves, we move into a deeper awareness of our self as an integral part of the natural world. Tracking, animal language, pattern-recognition, and other cultural mentoring techniques that have been used by a variety of cultures for thousands of years allow us to see our environment with greater clarity, and to experience our souls through intimate connection to the natural world. Kalliopeia is delighted to present Jon Young, a skilled teacher in nature awareness, to speak about this experience and how it opens a path of regenerative living for ourselves and for future generations.<br /><br />
Jon Young grew up in Monmouth County, NJ, and was mentored during his childhood as a naturalist, tracker, and survivalist by the tracker and author Tom Brown, Jr. This mentoring forms the basis for Jon's work. In 1978 Tom Brown, Jr. founded the outdoor tracking and survival school The Tracker School in Asbury, NJ, where Jon worked off and on as an instructor, special guest and children's program development specialist until 2001.<br /><br />
Inspired by his experiences with Tom Brown, Jr. as well as other mentors, and fueled by his studies in natural history and anthropology, Jon has pioneered an approach to nature awareness blending mentoring and cultural techniques from around the world with a broad array of tools for connecting with nature and developing holistic tracking skills. Jon developed a system that is now called “8 Shields Cultural Mentoring,” which tracks processes and provides techniques that are built into the design of one-on-one mentoring programs, family mentoring practices, community-based mentoring and more traditional modes of education. The 8 Shields Cultural Mentoring model has now influenced well over 100 nature-oriented programs in the United States, Canada and Europe, and is also used in his consulting for organizations, government agencies and communities around the world.

            <itunes:summary>This is part two of a two part conversation with Jon Young.

Kalliopeia is delighted to present Jon Young, a skilled teacher in nature awareness, to speak about this experience and how it opens a path of regenerative living for ourselves and for future generations.

An Introductory Alchemy Workshop with Kevin Townley Part 1

Part 1: This recording of a one-day workshop examines the philosophy and practice of the alchemists. Participants explored how all things in existence participate in three fundamental alchemical principles: Mercury, Sulfur, and Salt. These names are part of a symbolic language that represents form, quality, and life – principles that all known things possess.<br /><br />
The workshop investigates these principles and how they manifest in the kingdoms of nature, mineral, vegetable, animal, and human. Also, a further examination of the cycles of time are explored and how knowledge of these cycles can lead to a deeper understanding of the world we live in.
