Invitation to Beauty: a Workshop on Creativity
with Ruth Gendler
Saturday, September 26th, 2009 – 10:00am - 3:00pm
Beauty speaks to the soul in a grammar of pattern and color, light and music, harmony and rhythm.
Creativity has the potential to be an act of reverence, response, dialog with the world. The creative is our small offering to the Creator. Creating something ourselves involves heart and hand, eyes and feet, the body and the soul, process and materials. Like the breath, creativity moves in and through and around us. Our creativity is an expression of our belonging to each other and the world, our opportunity to participate and add our voices to the chorus of voices.
This workshop is an invitation to find our own ways and practices that can allow more beauty in our lives. We will explore the qualities of Beauty and creativity with simple writing and drawing exercises, silence, and discussion.
Artist, writer, and teacher J. Ruth Gendler is committed to the transformational potential of the arts. She is the author of Notes on the Need for Beauty: An Intimate Look at this Essential Quality, The Book of Qualities, and the editor of Changing Light: The Eternal Cycle of Night and Day. In addition to personal essays and poems, Gendler writes about the arts, education, health, and books. Her art work has been exhibited nationally and she has taught writing and art to children and adults in a variety of settings for twenty years.
