Nature Awareness and Cultural Mentoring

Friday, July 31st, 2009 – 7:30pm - 9:00pm

Saturday, August 1st, 2009 – 9:00am - 3:00pm

You are warmly invited to attend one or both events.

As we build meaningful relationships with the earth, our communities and ourselves, we move into a deeper awareness of our self as an integral part of the natural world. Tracking, animal language, pattern-recognition, and other cultural mentoring techniques that have been used by a variety of cultures for thousands of years allow us to see our environment with greater clarity, and to experience our souls through intimate connection to the natural world. Kalliopeia is delighted to present Jon Young, a skilled teacher in nature awareness, to speak about this experience and how it opens a path of regenerative living for ourselves and for future generations.

Friday’s evening lecture will introduce the core ingredients necessary to refine one’s perception and develop a soulful connection to the natural world. On Saturday Jon will share stories and techniques that attune our awareness to the webs of life and relationships that surround us. Saturday’s program will also include a hands-on excursion to a nearby residential area and park near downtown San Rafael; please come prepared to walk and spend time outdoors!

Donations toward Jon's work at the 8 Shields Institute are welcome but not required. The 8 Shields Institute works to pass teachings and methods of mentorship to neighborhood and community schools and programs. more >>

Jon Young grew up in Monmouth County, NJ, and was mentored during his childhood as a naturalist, tracker, and survivalist by the tracker and author Tom Brown, Jr. This mentoring forms the basis for Jon's work. In 1978 Tom Brown, Jr. founded the outdoor tracking and survival school The Tracker School in Asbury, NJ, where Jon worked off and on as an instructor, special guest and children's program development specialist until 2001.

Inspired by his experiences with Tom Brown, Jr. as well as other mentors, and fueled by his studies in natural history and anthropology, Jon has pioneered an approach to nature awareness blending mentoring and cultural techniques from around the world with a broad array of tools for connecting with nature and developing holistic tracking skills. Jon developed a system that is now called “8 Shields Cultural Mentoring,” which tracks processes and provides techniques that are built into the design of one-on-one mentoring programs, family mentoring practices, community-based mentoring and more traditional modes of education. The 8 Shields Cultural Mentoring model has now influenced well over 100 nature-oriented programs in the United States, Canada and Europe, and is also used in his consulting for organizations, government agencies and communities around the world. more >>
