Organizations interested in applying for a grant may submit a letter of inquiry anytime. Please follow the guidelines for making an initial inquiry in the Grant Application Process section of the website. After careful review, organizations that align closely with Kalliopeia's mission and meet the evaluation criteria will be sent a letter of invitation to submit a proposal. Kalliopeia Foundation reviews full proposals by invitation only. Applicants must be tax-exempt with 501(c)(3) status, or have an agreement with a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization to act as fiscal sponsor. The Foundation does not make grants to individuals, and does not support large, institutionally funded non-profits unless there is an internal program highly resonant with our mission that may not be otherwise funded.
The Foundation will consider letters of inquiry from international non-governmental organizations. However, current requirements for international grantmaking necessitate a more involved review and oversight process and therefore our funding in this area is currently limited.
First year Kalliopeia grants generally range from $5,000 to $30,000. However, the Foundation will consider larger first year grants depending on the strength of the proposal, its relevance to our mission, and the presence of compelling need in the culture.
The Foundation makes both general support and specific program grants.
In general the Foundation looks to establish long lasting relationships in support of projects that are well run and very closely aligned with our mission. We also may support particularly influential projects that closely align with our mission for just one year.
We are particularly interested in projects that have the potential to influence wider circles whether locally, nationally or globally, towards a transformation of consciousness resonant with our mission.
A Few Words About Our Proposal Review Process
The Staff and Board review proposals every one to two months, although the proposal development and review process can take up to six months. In reading a proposal, we consider the degree to which the project aligns with our mission, along with the potential the organization has to help address a compelling need in a community or wider culture. Our most valued relationships are with partners whose proposal and organizational culture reflect the following characteristics, in addition to a strong resonance with our mission:
- Inspired vision
- Strength and clarity of intention
- Organizational commitment
- Organizational vitality
- Honest and straightforward communication
- Provision of comprehensive information
- Effective implementation with strong administrative and management systems
