Fate and Destiny: The Two Agreements of the Soul
An excerpt from the Introduction of “Fate and Destiny” The Two Agreements of the Soul” by Michael Meade
Fate, Destiny, and Genius
Fate inscribes an area or territory that we are bound to enter. Destiny involves finding a way out or a way through exactly those areas and aspects that constrain the vitality of our lives. Fate places us in specific contexts where meaning and purpose can be explored. Wherever we brush against the limits of our fate we also stand near the doors of our destiny. When we face our fate in life we also begin to move it and when fate moves destiny moves closer. Only from the ground of destiny does an individual life make sense. Taken together, fate and destiny are purpose seen from the other end of life.

Despite the rational aspects of saying no to flying across the country once a month to study, of all things, mythology, I answered the call, and said yes! Perhaps what is most important about my Pacifica experience is that from the beginning it encompassed the components of the hero’s journey described by Joseph Campbell. Once a month I separated from my known environment and ventured into one quite different from my own. Now, through stories and the beat of the drum, I teach my inner-city youth to prepare themselves to embark upon their own journeys, to recall their own purpose in life. Continue reading
